SUNDAY, APRIL 18 - WALKING TOUR
I, Maria, am going to start a walking tour series. I
recently bought a book of 12 walking tours of different
Delaware towns and thought this would be a fun monthly
event.
Each month, we'll meet at the first stop, do the walking
tour, and then get dinner or a snack, depending on the time
and location. The book doesn't give mileage for the tours,
but I mapped two of them out and they are both under 1.5
miles. So it's not too strenuous a walk.
The first walk will be in Old New Castle on Sunday, April 18
at 1:00 pm. We will meet at the Southeast corner of Second
and Chestnut Streets (site of Fort Casimir historic marker).
After the walk, we'll get a late lunch or some ice cream,
depending on how hungry participants are.
Upcoming walks will include Dover, Georgetown, Laurel,
Lewes, Middletown, Milford, Newark, Seaford, Smyrna, and
Wilmington (Downtown and West-End/Trolley Square)
DATE: Sunday, April 18

Pending:
- POSTPONED – BLACK MARKET KNITTING
During WWII, my great-great uncle had a thriving black-market business in
his Army service in Europe. Meat? - no. Cigarettes? - no. Booze? –
no (his still was too heavy to carry around). Playing Cards? - no (although
he said the new plastic ones would have been a huge hit...).
Socks. Yes, socks. His mother had insisted that all her children learn to
sew, cook and knit well; and he was >very< good at knitting socks.
And scarves, and hats and gloves. Many soldiers received gifts, lovingly
knit, which just - weren't quite - what they needed. My uncle would, for
a fee, unravel, redesign and knit-to-fit anything anyone wanted to pay him
to do!
Socks made him the most money, as you can guess...an army marches on its
feet (apologies to Napoleon). Several ladies in Germany insisted he was
holding the yarn incorrectly, so he learned that method as well.
Then, he taught me to knit....which means I don't have any of the fancy
techniques in the books - but I can make almost anything. Ever knitted?
Never knitted? Drop in and I'll have needles, yarn, simple patterns and
some easy lessons (or bring your own goodie to start...) My husband will
show off his neck-warmer, carefully designed to use while riding motorcycles
and working in ship rigging; and easy to make. Of course we'll have some
food.
